1. What is Remote Learning?

Remote learning is where the teacher and the student cannot be in the classroom together, but the learning continues. The teacher is still teaching and the learner is still learning, but the format is different. In this model, the teacher provides work, either online or in take-home packs, ensuring that the continuity of learning continues. Teachers still monitor the student’s progress, check work where they can and provide regular feedback. The student undertakes to access the work given and complete it to the best of their ability.

2. Where does remote learning occur? I.e. What IT platform is the College using?

Primary
Kinder and Stage 1 students are provided with take-home bookpacks. Learning is to be directed and supervised by parents for this age group. Parents also receive an email each day via Seesaw, most often with teacher generated video instructions. Links to relevant online activities are also provided to parents.

Stages 2 and 3 use the Google Classroom platform, using IPads provided by the College, or parent purchased Chromebooks. Students login to their Google Classroom account and will see a detailed outline of the work for each lesson.

Secondary
All secondary students should be using their Chromebooks to access their lessons. Each class on their timetable has an online class in Google Classroom. The students log onto their Google Classroom and will see a detailed outline of the work for each lesson.

3. I am a little confused about how to best support my child with their schoolwork. Where do I go for help?

There are a number of options here, depending on your particular situation at the time.

If it is subject or class specific i.e. an assessment task or upcoming exam, your best port of call is your child’s classroom teacher, via email.

If it is IT related, parents are encouraged to email homehelp@bcc.nsw.edu.au, which will put you in touch with our IT team, who are here to help.

If you need help and support regarding daily routines, learning support or how your child is coping psychologically, then please contact Student Services, Stage Leaders (Secondary) or our Director of Teaching & Learning, Ms Melanie Melcum

4. How long is it expected that we will be remote learning?

On one level, this is an unknown. As a College, we will always follow the directives and advice of our Government and can only presume that remote learning will continue some time into Term 2. Our teaching staff are working diligently on innovative ways to deliver curriculum in this new model of delivery.

5. My child is sick and cannot attend their remote learning lessons for the day. What do we do?

In the first instance, please make contact with the College office to officially register your child’s absence for that particular school day at college@bcc.nsw.edu.au.

In addition, please contact your child’s classroom teacher via the appropriate learning platform, advising of their absence. If your child is sick for an extended period of time, please contact your child’s teacher regarding modifying course content and expectations.

6. Where do I find the latest updates around BCC action in relation to COVID-19?

BCC has created a webpage that brings together a one-stop-shop for all COVID-19 announcements, prayer support and remote learning advice. You can access the website here.

7. What if my child has an assignment due or a test coming up?

In Secondary, students are required to upload their assignments into their Google Classroom for that subject.

If there is a practical aspect, the teacher may direct them to take photographs or video the work they have done.

If the task was to be a test/exam, the teacher will either convert the test to a Google Form, or will modify the assessment and let the students know through Google Classroom.

8. I don’t understand how to navigate Google Classroom. What do I do?

There are a number of different options you can consider in this situation. You can:

  1. Encourage your child to chat with a fellow classmate for hints and tips
  2. Email the classroom teacher, Stage Leader, Faculty Coordinator or Director of Teaching & Learning, Ms Melanie Melcum for advice on using Google Classroom
  3. Email the ICT department at homehelp@bcc.nsw.edu.au
  4. Encourage your child to ask a question via the BCC Remote Support Google Classroom Classcode = 363v56x
  5. Watch this video from our Director of Teaching & Learning, Ms Melanie Melcum.
  6. Watch this Google Classroom tutorial video from Charlie, one of our Year 8 students.

9. My child is struggling with the technology. What do you suggest we do?

If you’re having problems with technology, please email our IT Team who will get back to you as soon as possible.

All secondary students can access the IT Remote Support Google Classroom where they can log their issue with the IT Team who will get back to them as soon as possible.
