Living Smart Festival’s ‘Best in Show’ goes to BCC!

During the holidays 20 schools entered the Living Smart Competition at Speers Point Park. All Stages from BCC contributed to the display. Primary School’s Earth Care Team helped with the Compost Display and the Plants for Better Health Garden. Year 9 Visual Arts students painted recycled cable drums and Year 12 student Amelia Bird’s Design & Technology HSC Major Work was also on display.

We are pleased to have received 1st place in ‘Best in Show’ judged by Costa Georgiadis and 2nd place in the ‘People’s Choice’ prize.

This is so exciting, only having had our community garden for one year, and are very proud of this achievement.

A big thank you to Wendy Abel, our amazing resident garden guru and her team Kerry Button, Bec King, Nat Black and Tryphena Pearson. Thank you to all who participated and visited. Well done team!

If you would like to be part of the BCC Common Grounds Community Garden please visit the garden on Wednesdays from 1pm.

Belmont Christian College receives multiple awards!, Belmont Christian College Environment award

The presentation speech below gives you a great idea of all that we are doing here at Belmont Christian College to help the environment.

“Belmont Christian College has a dedicated and enthusiastic environment team made up of students that meet on a weekly basis to discuss sustainability goals and strategies for their school.

A highly productive garden with vegetables, fruit trees, and herbs spans a huge 150m2 area at the front of this school. Students, teachers and parents tend to this amazing area ensuring fresh and tasty produce. Food from this garden is used in Food Technology classes, teaching students valuable life skills in food production and healthy eating. Fruit scrap bins collect students’ and teachers’ food scraps, which are then emptied into 5 Compost bins and 3 wormfarms.

A large rainwater tank also supplements a block of toilets and the science labs. Bathrooms and bubblers throughout the College now have push button and sensor tap ware to ensure minimum water wastage. Water audits conducted throughout the school identified old leaking water pipes, which have since been replaced, reducing water usage.

Belmont Christian College has recently replaced all of the older style fluro lighting with low power LED lights throughout the College. Although there were initial costs to this, the long term cost and energy saving will be significant.

Additional recycling bins help to recycle extra paper, cardboard and hard plastic. Printer cartridges, mobile phones, and batteries are also collected for recycling and low waste lunch days are promoted to reduce the amount of packaging students bring in their lunch box. The Mathematics faculty collects bottles and aluminium cans for Return and Earn. Through this process, data is collected and analysed and the money raised is put towards more environmental improvement initiatives.”
