CSSA Basketball

Our Primary Senior Boys and Girls teams travelled to Penrith on Monday for NSW CSSA Basketball. It’s always a tough competition, although Belmont has had quite a bit of success over the years.

The Boys team were coming in off the back of winning the Zone competition at the end of last term. They started well, posting two very convincing wins. In their 3rd and 4th games, they came up against two very evenly matched sides, and with fatigue setting in, our shooting started to go wayward. The boys narrowly lost those two games to 3rd in their pool.

The Girls team were semi-finalists at Zone and like the Boys, started very strongly. They went into their final pool game undefeated, but needed a win to progress to the semi-final. It was a very scrappy contest against Pacific Hills and went down to the wire, with the Belmont side unable to replicate their earlier form, going down by just 3 points to finish equal 5th in the whole competition.

CSSA Cricket

Our Primary Cricket team recently competed in the NSW CSSA Knockout Cricket competition.

The first round sees schools play for their Zone title, with the winner playing another Zone champion in the semi-finals. Our Zone only consisted of one other side, so we ventured out to Singleton to take on Carinya, Tamworth.

With a very inexperienced side, the boys were not sure how they would go, but quickly settled into the match. Belmont bowled first and restricted Carinya to 5/86 in the 20 over format, with Jed Pennington taking 2 wickets. Our batting started very slowly and as the required run rate crept up, Belmont looked like they were in trouble at 2/32 at the halfway point. However Amos Maddison and Kane Valaire came in and made some fast runs, with Belmont winning the game, and the Zone title, with 8 balls to spare. Belmont 3/87 (18.4 overs – A. Maddison 28no, K. Valaire 16no) def Carinya 5/86 (J. Pennington 2/20, A.Bell 1/11)

This meant we travelled to Sydney to play Northern Beaches in the CSSA Semi-final. On a wet and windy day in Terrey Hills, we lost the toss and batted first. Once again our run rate suffered, scoring just 30 runs off the first 10 overs. There would be no heroics from our Singleton game-winners, as Amos Maddison was involved in a mix-up, to be runout for just 7 after looking good early. Joshua Culjak scored 15, but it was going to be a struggle with the team finishing at 7/74.

The small total would require exceptional bowling, but wides and no-balls would haunt the side. Belmont removed the opposition’s dangerous batsmen fairly early, but the damage was done with a number of wides costing the team in the end. Northern Beaches 4/76 (15 overs – N. Tepper 2/11) def Belmont 7/74 (J. Culjak 15, K. Valaire 9)

Woolworths Cricket

Over 40 students from Yr 6 (plus 2 x Yr5’s) had a great day out at the Woolworths Cricket Day last Friday at Cameron Park.

This is a fun day, where teams from schools in our Zone come together and play some quick Super 8 style cricket. There’s no competition as such, although I’m sure the students were keeping a count of their wins, and it is a day where students can have a great day out, hone their cricket skills, whilst representing the College in a relaxed atmosphere.

Our students displayed great sportsmanship and comradery with the other schools on the day.
