From our Deputy Principal, Mr David Holland
‘Why does it tick and why does it tock?’
‘Why don’t we call it a granddaughter clock?’
‘Why are there pointy things stuck to a rose?’
‘Why are there hairs up inside of your nose?’
She started with Why? and then What? How? And When?
By bedtime she came back to Why? once again.
She drifted to sleep as her dazed parents smiled at the curious thoughts of their curious child, who wanted to know what the world was about.
They kissed her and whispered, ‘You’ll figure it out.’
–Ada Twist, Scientist by Andrea Beaty
I love a good story. I particularly love a good children’s story. Children’s stories are wonderfully clever at taking complex, adult problems and breaking them down into simple bites that children can understand and respond to (adults too!). You may have never encountered ‘Ada Twist, Scientist’ by Andrea Beaty but the quote above gives a pretty good representation of my first 4 weeks at BCC. I am asking a lot of curious questions that sometimes start with ‘Why?’, and they often then progress ‘What? and ‘How?’, and eventually wind their way back to ‘Why?’. My role as the College Deputy carries with it a level of responsibility of course, but I think that there is always a hope that an incoming leader can look at things with fresh eyes and find ways to add value or strengthen practices and processes. To do this well, I am working hard to understand as deeply as possible, how BCC does things. As I understand what and how we do something, the most important question to ask is ‘Why?’.
Like Ada Twist, figuring things out will definitely take time (for example getting my head around the traffic flow and buses around BCC at 2:50), but eventually I’ll figure it out. Then the real fun begins!
I’m sure you are all aware of this, but you are all a part of a wonderful school community. The welcome I have received from students, staff and parents alike has been very warm. The culture here is excellent and the staff camaraderie is a key feature of the school culture. I’d also like to thank the students of BCC for the sincere way that they have welcomed and accepted me to this new role – they are amazing!
I’m Looking forward to the exciting times and challenges ahead.
P.S. Why not borrow ‘Ada Twist, Scientist’ from the College Library this week. It is a great read!

Prayer for HSC Students
It’s that time of year again when we ask people to volunteer to pray for the 2024 HSC students. Our goal is for each HSC student to have at least one person from the College community committing to pray for them each day from the beginning of Term 3 until when the HSC exams finish on 8 November. We are asking people to commit to praying for two specific HSC students, the names of whom we will provide to you.
Why start specific prayer in Term 3? Well, in Term 3 the HSC gets more real for the students as they have their HSC Trials in August, Major Works (Art and D&T) are due towards the end of August, and Drama and Music performances, along with Language Oral Exams in September. The HSC Exams start on 14 October.
As part of our wider community focus, we also ask that you please pray for the HSC students at Belmont High School. It can be a challenging time for so many young people.
If you are interested in committing to praying for two of our HSC students, please contact us via prayerwarriors@bcc.nsw.edu.au

Representative Honours
We’ve had a number of sporting representatives in our Primary School over the past few weeks.
Siena Iannazzo – Futsal
Siena was part of an Australian Futsal Association team that travelled to Malaysia to represent Australia U12 Girls in the Unity Cup. A fantastic opportunity for Siena coupled with winning the tournament. Well done Siena! Not only an Australian representative, but also an international tournament champion!
Molly Mawson – AFL
This week Molly ventured out to Albury, representing Mid North Coast and Inland at the NSW PSSA AFL Championships. Even though the players were mostly new, the team were the defending champions and went down in their first game to Metropolitan East. The girls rallied though, winning all of their next 4 games to make the final against Metropolitan East.
In the final the defending premiers went back to back with a comprehensive 30-6 win.
Congratulations Molly – NSW PSSA Champion!
Elysia Terbeeke – Netball
Congratulations to Ely who played Centre for the NSW CSSA Netball team and the CIS Championships, which also acted as a selection trial for those players to play in the CIS team.
This level of netball is incredibly competitive just to get to, and even more impressive was that Ely played in a position she doesn’t normally play in and is only in Year 5. The CSSA team lost just one game on the day.
Primary Aerobics
Our College Aerobics teams had their first competition of the season on the weekend at the Newcastle Super Series event at NEX.
The girls performed very well, with a few sporting their new medal bling at school on Monday.
They now have just a few weeks of training before State Titles and an opportunity to qualify for Nationals in Queensland later in the year.
Well done to our teams!
Backstreet Girlz – 2nd
Super Stars – 3rd
Thunderbolts – 4th
Galaxy Girls – 5th
Primary Athletics Carnival

There were some brilliant results recorded and plenty of Personal Best times, throws and jumps achieved.
Well done to all of our students who participated and also to our Year 11 Sports Coaches and Secondary helpers who helped to run events and contributed to the success of the day.

Creative Arts News
Year 9 Visual Arts Excursion – Sculptures at Scratchley
Our Year 9 Visual Arts students recently visited the inspiring Sculptures at Scratchley exhibition. The showcase featured a diverse range of works made from all types of materials, sparking creativity and admiration among our budding artists. A highlight of the trip was seeing the impressive work of our past student, Samuel Troyer, proudly displayed among the professional pieces. This experience not only broadened the students’ understanding of sculptural techniques but also illustrated the exciting possibilities within their artistic journeys. We look forward to seeing the creative outcomes inspired by this visit!
